Helping Latvians discover creative hobbies through pottery, photography, and nature

Salovaene Solutions Ltd

12 Years of Craft Guidance

Arturs grew up in Riga surrounded by his grandmother's pottery studio. That early exposure shaped everything — his curiosity about Latvian craftsmanship, his drive to document creative communities, and his belief that anyone can learn if they're shown the right way.

After studying Cultural Studies at the University of Latvia, he spent four years working directly with artisans at the Riga Ceramics Workshop. That hands-on experience taught him something crucial: beginners don't need complicated theory. They need encouragement, clear steps, and a sense that it's actually possible.

His career shifted to editorial work in 2012, and it was the right move. Since then, he's published over 150 guides on Latvian hobbies — from pottery basics to birdwatching identification. In 2015, his guide to joining photography clubs in Rīga reached 15,000 readers and led to collaborations with the Latvian Photography Association and the Latvian Birdwatching Society.

What drives him most is demystifying things. He's seen too many people assume they're "not creative" or "not the outdoor type" when they just haven't found their entry point yet. Over 8,000 people have used his guides to start pottery, join photo clubs, or visit Pape Nature Reserve. That's the work he's proud of.

Areas of Expertise

Deep knowledge across Latvian hobby culture and creative communities

Pottery & Ceramics

Hands-on knowledge of beginner pottery techniques, studio selection in Rīga, and the fundamentals of wheel throwing and hand-building. He's trained over 500 first-time potters through practical guides and workshops.

Photography Community

Certified instructor with the Latvian Photography Association. Knows the major clubs in Rīga, their teaching styles, and how to connect beginners with the right community. His 2015 guide became the go-to resource for club seekers.

Nature & Birdwatching

Collaborator with the Latvian Birdwatching Society. He's spent 200+ hours at Pape Nature Reserve documenting species and teaching beginners how to identify birds. Knows the seasonal patterns and best times to visit.

Amber & Craft Workshops

Extensive connections with Latvian artisans working in amber jewelry and traditional crafts. He's interviewed dozens of workshop owners and documented how beginners can learn these ancient techniques in modern studio settings.

Cultural Studies Research

Degree from the University of Latvia in Cultural Studies. His approach combines academic rigor with accessible storytelling — he researches the history and cultural context behind hobbies, then explains it in plain language.

Community Building

Over a decade connecting Latvian creative communities. He's built relationships with studio owners, photographers, naturalists, and artisans. This network is what makes his guides practical and current — they reflect real communities, not theory.

Degree in Cultural Studies

Graduates from the University of Latvia. Thesis focused on the role of traditional crafts in modern Latvian identity — combining academic research with personal passion for ceramics.

"The biggest barrier to learning a hobby isn't talent — it's not knowing where to start. Once someone takes that first pottery class or joins a photography club, everything changes. I've seen people who thought they weren't creative completely transform. That's why I write guides. I want to remove the mystery."
